Was it a lack of effort? Northwestern did prevail on the Matto chart (25-19) but coaches didn't feel effort was the issue. Like several other losses — the blown lead at Minnesota, the collapse at Penn State — it seemed to be a basketball I.Q. issue, among other things.

The shot chart revealed Northwestern made 15 field goals in the second half. Nine were layups, most a product of the back-cuts and patience that trademarks the Princeton-style offense. The Illini never seemed to figure out how they were getting beat on defense.

"Coach had us prepared for it," said Brandon Paul, who had 22 points. "But we didn't come out and do what we needed to do to win the game."

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. - Former University of Illinois defensive end Whitney Mercilus earned consensus first-team All-America honors in 2011, becoming the 20th player in the storied history of Illinois football to earn that distinction.

Mercilus was one of seven unanimous consensus All-America selections in 2011, garnering first team honors by all five organizations used by the NCAA: American Football Coaches Association, Associated Press, Football Writers Association of America, The Sporting News and Walter Camp Foundation. To earn consensus All-America status, a player has to be named first team on at least two of the five selected All-American teams and must have the most first-team honors among all players at his position. Second- and third-team selections were used to break ties.
