The Linking Illini: Josh Brent, Ron Zook and preseason rankings

Memorial Day(yeah, I know it was yesterday) is generally considered the official start of summer, the weather gets warmer,  the pools open, and America resumes  its love affair with beer and grilled meats. It is also the first milestone on our long, seemingly unending, march towards college football season, by Labor Day, the Illini will be back in St. Louis to hopefully end forever the painful series with Missouri, and the world will once again be right. But Memorial Day is also of course the day Americans consider the  people who have put their lives at risk for the benefit of their country, and those who still do so. With that in mind, we have some stories that dove tail nicely with these themes.

So, now... LOS LINKS

  • Ron Zook is a good guy, no matter what you think of his coaching job here at Illinois, you've got to admit he has a way of dealing with people. So it really shouldn't surprise you that with the precious little down time he is afforded away from football, the booster circuit or recruiting, he is actually doing something of value. In this case, he is on a USO goodwill trip to the Middle East. Here for your perusal, is a video of said visit.

  • Josh Brent might not be an Illini anymore.. If the story is true, it might be the second consecutive bad summer for the very big and talented tackle. After last year's jail time for a DUI, failing some summer classes isn't nearly as serious or dangerous, but the result is the same: no more Josh Brent on the football field.
  • You don't have to wait much longer for the Illini's preseason "ranking". According to the Sporting News it is a whopping 94, with a projection of 2009esque win totals of 3-9, 2-6. That is not really all that encouraging is it? The Illini fall only just ahead of Buffalo, New Mexico, and Minnesota (haha! Still not the worst in the Big Ten!) I still don't know what to make of the football team, and its chances to actually win some conference games, because I really can't get a good hold on the impact of the new assistants, Sporting News is apparently taking the more pessimistic of approaches.

I think The Sporting News is being generous.

But for fuck’s sake, I hope I’m wrong.

Then again, I’ve been drinking.

St. Louis Game Time . . . I need another beer.

So

It figures that the Zookinator would head over to the middle east after I left—but that doesn’t take away from the fact that it is an incredibly good and generous thing for him to do. Also, what do you mean by resumes its love affair with grilled meats and alcohol…i don’t recall ever having stopped loving them.
