Illini to face Stony Brook in opening round of NIT Wednesday

Cirque Du Soleil, I hope you are worth it.

The Illini will play on Wednesday night, at Stony Brook Sports Complex. in Stony Brook, New York. It seats 5,000.

We are the #1 seed in the NIT and have to play in a rec center on Long Island, because of a french interpretive dance circus.

Let that sink in.

The game will be on ESPNU, so I hope it will also be on 360. 8pm Central

ANOTHER UPDATE: This local paper suggests the complex will be open after all.

It will be the first basketball game held in the Stony Brook Arena in nearly two years. The basketball teams have been playing their home games in the smaller Prichard Gymnasium for the last two years. According to a report on Newsday.com, the Arena was prepared earlier this year in case the men’s basketball team had made it to the America East finals.

They can’t host it ANYWHERE else? I saw Stony Brook was the home team, and I thought it had to be a mistake.

Well, this just makes it a perfect day.

[Homer shows Bart "Wonderbat".]
Bart: Wow. How many home runs you gonna hit with that thing?
Homer: Let's see... We play thirty games. Ten at-bats a game. Mm...three thousand.

Pretty sure you'll be playing us in Pritchard Gym

unless they’re reopening the Sports Complex for the first time all season, it’s under renovation. Then again, I was just there yesterday, and the main court was taped off, so it’s entirely possible that the NIT forced them to open it ahead of schedule.

It’s a really nice complex for a mid-major school to have, but if it’s not open, you get to play us in the side gym that seats 1,600 and pretty much is worse than the one you played on in high school.

Yeah

the Sports Complex really isn’t a rec center, even though the name is deceiving. It’s a pretty nice arena, but it’s been out of service all year—though a huge event like this might prompt a reopening. The floor of the complex is three side-by-side basketball courts, the center being the actual arena floor and the others practice courts. Typically, the two side ones are open to the public, but this year they were putting in new floors on the middle one, so that was open as well. However, yesterday my friends and I went and found the main court re-floored, re-painted, and with new rims hanging. I’m guessing somebody knew something, and the idea of having us host Illinois had been in the works for a week or so.

Let me put it this way—we hosted Vermont a couple weeks ago to decide the regular season AEC title, the biggest game, by far, in SB history. That game was forced into the Pritchard Gym, where 800 people were turned away for lack of seating. The fixing up of the Sports Complex has been rapid and new.

This is the best picture I could find of the Complex, so you can see it’s a legitimate arena. If not, well, I’m pretty sure the Pritchard Gym will be a legitimately hostile arena, even if SB is a commuter school with no basketball history.

Okay, just checked

This game will mark the reopening of the Sports Complex. Instead of filling up a tiny gym to the gills, you’ll get to play in a dead but large arena. Presumably, the NIT forced that change, and Stony Brook was more than willing to comply to get on national TV.

It’s a pretty nice drive out from the city, about an hour or so, I’d advise any Illini alums in New York City to come down and enjoy our fine town.

thanks for all the info man

sorry to have disparaged your court. but this is a worst case scenario given where we were yesterday

No worries

I just wonder what kind of turnout we’ll get—the most ever was a little over 4K against Nova a few years back. It’s a pretty outdated arena, no Jumbotron or anything, but it’s definitely nicer than most schools of similar stature have, I’d bet. As a Penn State student, I’ve watched you enough to know you shouldn’t worry about Stony Brook—unless Mike Tisdale and Davis have trouble posting up on the 6’7 Seawolf “bigs” (seriously, our best rebounder is 6’4), the only thing you’re missing out on is the ability to watch a very boring game live. Now you can switch to Modern Family.

NYC ILLINOIS ALUMNI TRANPORT OPTIONS??

Just checked LIRR and there are not many opions for getting out there on LIRR between 6 and 7 pm and the return trip options are essentially non-existent. Anyone have any other suggestions for how Illini Nation can go support our squad?

Yeah

Drive. It’s really not too bad, right off exit 62 of the LIE. Or take the train to Ronkonkoma and take a taxi for a 20-minute ride. If it’s really that important to you.

The train drops you off right across from campus—maybe a 5-minute walk to the sports complex, so I don’t see where your problem would be if you took the 11:42 back to the city, changing in Hicksville. If you’re really that bummed out about having to stay an extra half hour in our humble town, well, don’t come.
