From our intrepid readers: Iowa using Krush invasion to inspire students

I don't get a lot of reader mail, but when I do I usually post it. HTTO reader Kyle (Quad Cities represent) forwarded this email from the  Hawks' Nest the Iowa Hawkeye student section for basketball games. I enjoyed this as I am sure all of you will also.

Dear Hawkeyes Fan,

Were you embarrassed by the invasion of Carver-Hawkeye Arena by the University of Illinois student section, The Orange Krush, last Wednesday night?

If you were in the Arena, were you impressed with their chants and unity?

Do you wish the University of Iowa had something like that?

If so, what are you doing about it? The Hawks Nest is working on solutions. Join us!

Come to the Hawks Nest Insider Meeting and help us continue grow so that we can soon have the unity and prowess that many other student sections in the Big Ten Conrference currently have!

There is no reason that we shouldn't have an intimidating, powerful student section at Carver-Hawkeyes because, clearly, it can have a game-changing impact on the outcome of a game. However, in order to get to that level, it takes planning, initiative, passion, and most importantly...participation.

Please make it a priority to attend the Insider Meeting and spread the word as much as possible so that we can continue to take the necessary steps to get Carver rocking!

See you tonight!

Sure you may be able to get the unity and the spirit of the Krush, but you well never be able to match how delightfully creative and downright mean they get. Its for charity! So it's okay!

being embarrassed

As a long-time Illini fan, I know I’m not alone in the belief that it’s the Krush that should be embarrassed. I just shook my head when I saw them rush the court after Saturday night’s game. Where’s the pride? Shouldn’t we EXPECT to beat good teams? It shouldn’t be a shock to beat a top 5 team without their best player. It was really sad and disappointing to watch; I hope it doesn’t happen again.

please.

it’s more elitist and snobbish to have that mindset than the other way around. it was a huge win for this team and for this program.

The Hawks’ Nest also chanted “pussy” everytime McCamey touched the ball in the second half after he took a shot to the face.

Before diving into the nebulous world of “class” that is so often visited in the sports realm, was anyone injured or otherwise harmed by rushing the court? The Krush has done far worse (see: eric gordon’s family). No, we should not expect to beat good teams with wildly inconsistent offensive play or a virtual lack of post presence. Davis and Tisdale can be displaced and manhandled by the likes of Iowa. In the grand scheme of things, rushing the court is a relatively harmless gesture compared to some of the other crap in the world of college sports.

Now, we just have to wait for the inevitable retaliation from the MSU football team. Beware all you dorm-dwellers in the CU.

This was beautifully-done.

And as an Illini fan with family connections to Iowa State . . . it’s doubly hilarious.

As someone who has spent half of their undergrad education at Iowa and half at Illinois, I feel I’m qualified to say that the only sports the students really get up for are Football and Wrestling (and the latter is only because they’re really good at it). Iowa doesn’t have many chants at any of their sports. The only thing that comes close at the football games is the four corners I-O-W-A. When I first came to Illinois, I was shocked to learn how much more organization the student section had. In short, it’ll be over a decade before there’s any similarity between the two, and that’s if they’re really committed.

Krush is not, and should not be, embarrassed

It was a huge game. Illinois needed that victory and the emotion was turned up to the max. Gameday was there, which added to it all. I don’t think people who are criticizing the Krush understand that it is so much different when you are on the floor than when you are up in the stands or watching on tv. Being that I was part of the storming and part of Krush, I can honestly say that we did not plan on storming but are in no way embarrassed by it. Coach Weber had no problem with it. If were too good for that, then why not rip into McCamey for standing on the scorer’s table after the game. Aren’t we too good for that? No, it’s stupid. The students wanted to celebrate with the players and unless those criticizing it stood outside at 5:45 AM to get into Gameday or waited outside 3 hours before the game to yell as loud as they could for the team, I think they should shut their mouthes.

In response to the actual thing being posted, that is hilarious. I was there in Iowa City and can say that it was an awesome experience. You shudda seen the faces of the few Iowa fans that were there, they were pissed. But at least someone was “impressed by our chants and unity.” HAHA. Get some Iowa

that's too bad..

You may have had fun running on the court at the time, but re-watch the game on TV. It made all of you look stupid. Dicky V quickly said how stupid it was, and how he was disappointed in the Krush. Obviously, not a good reflection of the school or program during a nationally televised game. If that doesn’t bother you at all, that’s too bad.

Ok...

First of all, I did rewatch the game. Secondly, don’t let Vitale fool you, he doesn’t give a shit about Illinois or the Big Ten, so I can’t take anything he says about us seriously. Then to say it looks bad on the basketball program and the school is rediculous. We didn’t chuck quarters at Tom Izzo (West Virginia fans at a Pitt coach), we didn’t show up Michigan St, we celebrated after a huge game. Take it for what it was, which was the biggest moment the program has had since Dee Brown was here. I think Coach Weber would know the most about the reflection of the program and he said he was fine with it. I mean seriously, what did you want us to do? High five the person to our right and walk out in a single file line, making as little noise as possible? Is that what the Illinois fan handbook says to do?
