Signature Win: Illini beat Spartans 78-73

The Illini needed this game bad to make a real case for March and they did it. Beating the #5 Spartans is the win this team may have needed to turn the corner on the season. It's the game that hopefully will pay dividends for future tough games against Purdue Wisky and Ohio State. But you know, one game at a time.

  • The Illini took a giant step towards the post season tonight, and they have Demetri McCamey to thank for it. 22 points and 11 assists, an astounding 6 3 bombs. He stands in no one's shadow.
  • the Assembly Hall was off the hook tonight. insane good old fashioned Illini basketball
  • Mike Davis "we feel like we made so much progress since we played them last time" At least Mike did, 14 points and the exclamation dunk at the end of the game.
  • Speaking of dunks. Brandon Paul is going to win every dunk contest this team holds from now on. Good gods he had a might jam tonight.
  • "I'm not trying to prove I am one of the best players in the country, I am just trying to get this team in the tournament." DMAC
  • Demetri McCamey "This is my house"

Star-divide

  • This team definitely benefited from not having to face Lucas tonight, the Spartans 18 turnovers and only had 14 assists. Credit them for staying in it with numbers like that. Izzo: "We struggled without Kalin but thats no excuse"
  • The reason they stayed in it? A 54% shooting night and beating the Illini on the boards by 10. Draymond Green had 16 boards SIXTEEN
  • Izzo on Lucas "I have no idea (when he'll be ready to play) I do a lot of things but hurting a kid so it affects him the rest of the year is not one of 'em"
  • Bruce: "we talked about playing at a magic level, and I think we did"
  • BW "when we made the runs we had great defense"
  • BW "at half time we had 5 guys without a rebound, they are tough to deal with on the boards"
  • "We took a step, but it's not like we made it."
  • "I told the guys, I want to see that (Mike Davis) has earned the start, and I think he did."
  • Oh and did I mention...what a win.

    A couple of things

This team desperately needed a signature win to go with beating Clemson and they just got it. Way to go Orange. The truly sad thing is that now that I am home, I am actually seeing less of the Illini than when I was in Afghanistan. That leads into the next thing. I’d like to thank everyone here that supports the troops that area still deployed and by extension—me—by keeping them in your thoughts and prayers. They need all the help and support they (we) can get. Hopefully I’ll be able to post a little more on here again now that I’m home. Enjoy the win tonight—we’ve certainly earned it.

And thanks to you and all the servicemen and women for everything you do.

That is the home-court advantage that has been missing since 06-07, IMO. Orange Krush has always prided themselves for being “too good” to rush the court, but I guess you can’t really blame them here after an emotional day/ending.

Now let’s carry on this momentum to Wisconsin and Purdue and for the rest of the season!!!

    Hell of a game

McCamey just wouldn’t miss, and our backup point guards couldn’t handle your D.

This was beautiful to come home to.

I still feel the Illini didn’t need the win as much as Michigan State didn’t need to lose it, but hey . . . a big win is a big win.

    What a game!

This was by far the best game I have ever seen in person. Not to mention the best and loudest crowd the Assembly Hall has seen in some time, if not ever. McCamey was a stud. It was nice to see Mike Davis step up and DJ is the man.
I don’t know why everyone is making a big deal out of the Krush rushing the court. It was easily the biggest win this program has had since Dee and James put on the orange and blue and also was the first time Gameday has ever been to Champaign. It was a huge win. Being part of the Orange Krush, I can honestly say we did not plan on rushing but the emotion carried us out on the court and there was no stopping.
Anyways, what a game. Hope the Illini can keep it up as Tuesday night will be very tough.

If you want to know more about this weekend from the Krush’s point of view, check out

The reason people made a big deal out of Krush rushing the court is that

usually the only time you see fans rushing the court is when a bad program beats a good program. Especially lower tier Big 6 conference schools beating the conference powerhouse. As a member of Krush during its haydays in 2005-2007, it has always filtered down that we were too elite of a school to do so. You never see UNC, Kansas, Duke or Florida do it, because they expect to win. We’ve always felt like we’re at that same level. We didn’t storm the court after beating number 1 Wake Forest. We didn’t rush the court after beating number 7 MSU, when we were number 6 in 2006.

Some will say we rushed the court against Penn State that year after McBride’s buzzer beater that was disallowed, but that was only 3 or 4 drunken idiots. In all, I believe the rest of the OK, remained in their seats.

So really, just nothing against rushing the court. We’ve just always been seen as “above it”. Usually you only see the lower tier, bad teams rush the court, and by rushing the court now, some might see this as admitting that we are on that level. No one can really judge unless they are actually on the floor though. That is why, IMO, people are throwing a fit about the OK rushing the court.
