Illini lose to Ohio State 24-13. Is close good enough?

Photo

So at the end of the season, when in all likelihood, the Buckeyes have won the Big Ten and we count the illini wins, we will look at the score of this game and say "wow, the Illini really were lucky to have played OSU so close." We will probably not remember that the Illini were in a position to win the game in the fourth quarter, and had every opportunity to take the lead throughout the second half.

I am actually very pleased with a great deal of what I saw from the Illini on Saturday, with the exception of two huge gains on the ground by Terrelle Pryor, the defense kept the likely Heisman candidate pretty well in check. Likewise, though there were far too many dropped balls and a pretty limited run game, considering the Illini faced one of the top defenses in the league they played at fairly well.

What concerns me though, is that with 4 minutes left in the fourth quarter, and down a touchdown, we didn't try and win the game. You don't get opportunities like this every week. We know this team needs to get as many wins as possible, and it needs to make a bowl to gain any semblance of credibility with recruits. Down by one score against the number two team in the country, you have attempt to tie, not kick a field goal. We cannot be happy with simply keeping the game close with a good team when we have an opportunity to win.

Star-divide

The second half of this game was a bit too similar to the Missouri game: the opposing defense started to blitz and challenge the line and  Nathan Scheelhaase was forced to run around for his life. Mikel LeShoure was gobbled up at the line and with maybe one exception never allowed to break open and demonstrate his speed.

We know what went wrong, but at least there are some good things we can hang our hat on.

  • Trulon Henry grabbed two interceptions for the Illini defense, the first two of the year, leading me to believe that while the defensive backfield is injured and playing outside their natural positions, there is some hope that they are improving and maybe even capable of some big plays here and there. Interceptions can make up for getting caught out of position from time to time.
  • Nathan Scheelhaase showed that he isn't completely without an arm, going 12-22 for 109 yards (that's more yards than Pryor) and has mercifully decided to keep his feet firmly on the ground. He did throw an INT, but he seems to be making good decisions overall.
  • Anthony Santella is a punting BAMF. Santella's kicking was spectacular given the conditions, and kept the Buckeyes deep enough in their own territory to keep the score very close the entire game. This will win us a game this year, I guarantee it.
  • Though I mentioned before that we cannot be satisfied by simply doing well against a good team, the performance in this game does suggest that we will stand a pretty good chance against the rest of the Big Ten, and Penn State is actually looking pretty darn beatable right now I think.

Well I agree that you don't get chances to beat Ohio State very often,

I think Zook made the right call there to kick a FG. What was it, 4th and 7 from the 9? With a freshmen QB who hasn’t been exactly playing great all game against one of the best defenses in the country, I think you have to take the points there. If you do tie it up with a TD, you give OSU the ball back with ~3 minutes and ~2 timeouts, they can just drive it down the field kick a FG and win. While it wasn’t the sexy call I think it was the right call. You go for it on 4th and don’t get it, game over.

all you are doing is delaying the inevitable then

because you have to get a stop and the ball back anyway if you kick the FG, but you aren’t guaranteed another shot at a touchdown. Besides, if you know you have to stop the OSU offense again, don’t you improve your chances by leaving them at the 13, rather than starting them at the 28 yard line or so on kick off?

It was going to be that same freshman QB who would have had to lead a drive down the field to score a TD against that same defense, only from a much worse field position, and that’s if everything went according to plan after kicking the FG

fact is, that was the the best chance the Illini had had for a touchdown since the first quarter and they played it safe, and as result they lost.

good point jack

but i have to agree with joe. zook played it too safe. in that position as a team with little or nothing to lose against the number two team in the country, he should have pulled the trigger.

can't say I disagree with that thinking either

maybe he thought they could get a more favorable situation to score a touchdown than what they were in before they kicked the FG? definitely risk in either choice though

One thing really stuck out to me about the Illini last night.

They came prepared. They had a defensive and an offensive game plan, and they worked (until the fourth quarter, that is). I gotta give Petrino and Koenning mad props for having their guys ready to play.

Ditto

Coaches have done an incredible job this year in game-planning. We are just a little short on talent/experience. I hope we keep these coaches around long enough to develop our young talent. Another year learning the system and another year of D1 experience and we could be looking at a legitimate 7+ win season.

I watched most of those games . . .

and came away thinking . . . wow, what a typical Ohio State game. They bore you to tears with their offense, their defense flies to the ball and lets you get nothing consistently going, and by the end you think you still have a chance but they take that chance away from you by making the play at the end. God I hate that.

St. Louis Game Time . . . I need another beer.
And I can also write things in 140 characters or fewer.
