Around SBN: Champions League Preview with Jimmy Conrad

Illini defeat Indiana, hang 42 points on Hoosiers.

I really do feel bad for Ben Chappell, he will be a broken husk of a man by the end of this season. The Illini were really effective of getting hits on the large Indiana QB, and most of the time that was from only rushing three d-linemen. Corey Liuget and Clay Nurse will make Chappell glad he doesn't have to play here anymore. The end result of this pressure was the four INTs caught by Illini defenders, including two that went back for TDs and one that should have. I remember when this Illini team would struggle to win the turnover battle, now they seem to be getting them in gobs, although maybe playing Indiana means statistical aberrations across the board, they really are that bad.

We have tried this in the past, lets do the rolling coach post game bullet points.

  • RZ "Nathan's hand was stepped on late in the game, probably not serious."
  • RZ clearly implies that the facemask problem for the Illini is frustrating, especially the Liuget penalty that probably would have been a 5 yard incidental under the old rules.
  • RZ: Hawthorne can get a lot better, he is essentially only playing in his second game of the season."

Star-divide

As far as games go, I don't know if you could ask for a better outcome. since the Illini went up by a touchdown in the first quarter, they never really looked back. Martez Wilson blocked a punt, Nate Bussey blocked a punt for a safety, and Leshoure ran for 77 yards and a TD. It was thoroughly satisfactory.

Nathan Scheelhaase had an alright day throwing and running, he had one fumble lost but thankfully no interceptions thrown. I'll take 13/21 for 123 yards any day when our defense is playing this good.

All in all, there isn't much to say about this, Illinois was very clearly the better team, and Indiana completely eliminated any of their chance at competing with their turnovers.  I can't think of a better way to celebrate the 100th Homecoming here in Champaign.

Solid win.

And now time to beat up on Purdue. I like this part of the schedule.

The Illini should beat Purdue and Minnesota at home

That gives Illini six wins and a bowl berth. Another win at Michigan, Northwestern or Fresno and Illinois will probably go the Insight Bowl.

The next four games should tell us how good Illinois is

The three teams that Illinois lost to have a combined one loss and the Illini have been in all three games.

solid win

I love the fact that all three phases of the game (O, D, special teams) are all contributing. They just gotta keep the momentum going now.

Great win indeed.

Today’s other Purdue and Minnesota loses to Ohio State and Penn State makes me that much more confident we can take care of business in the next few weeks. Very optimistic for a bowl game!!!

Taking care of business against an inferior opponent.

This is something that was desperately missing at times last year. I like it a whole bunch.

St. Louis Game Time . . . I need another beer.
