Dissappointment, to say the very least: Illini fall to Mizzou again
It was a day when absolutely nothing went right. In the first series Benn goes down and is out for the game. Jason Ford goes down for the game. Daniel Dufrene was scratched before the game even started. Early on the offense looked it was in a decent position, not good enough however to get a score.
Blaine Gabbert was able (to his absolute credit) to pick apart a secondary that was caught out of position, missing their coverages, and allowing too much room off the line to the Tiger receivers. The D-line was getting good pressure up the middle but not nearly enough to make up for the passes that Gabbert was able to make.
What is very disappointing is the way the offense performed today. Given the firepower in the receiver position, given how young the Mizzou D is the Offense really should have scored much more often than it did. It suffered however rather terribly from calamity. An Interception after a tip from AJ Jenkins, Juice getting stepped on my his OG on 4th and short deep in the red zone. A great pass and reception flushed away by a fumble by Cumberland. It is sad to say that this unit, with this much firepower was shut out from the endzone until the fourth quarter.
Meanwhile the defense could not get off of the field, the secondary was exposed and gave up first down after first down. Frustration and disappointment were easily the theme of today's game. When the hell are we ever going to beat this team?
Going forward, we have our home opener next week against Illinois State. I know many people want to chalk that up as a win, but unless the defense gets massively retooled this week we cannot assume anything. I believe that this offense, if it can avoid sloppy and costly mistakes, can still keep this team in any game. But this defense has alot to prove now.
Take heart people, we have lost to this team before and it hasn't been the end of the season. I am not saying anything other than, there are still eleven weeks of this to go. For better or for worse.

Disappointment is an understatement
The one thing I took away from this game is that team didn’t see very smart and played without any heart. I didn’t see any leadership from Juice on offense and Martez on defense. Martez looked confused and didn’t play fast.
Juice was the 2nd best QB on the field and it wasn’t close. His release is so slow. He has improved very little since his sophomore season. Unless this was an aberration this is going to be another long season. The good news is the rest of the Big Ten that I saw looked equally crappy. Better hope USC goes unbeaten and plays for the BCS championship or its going to be another Rose Bowl blowout. I’ll take them to beat OSU at Columbus next weak even though they are starting a true freshman.

Damn, man
I figured our game in Illinois would be the toughest of the year. Yikes. Every year, man, you guys fool me worse than VT fools everyone else. I always think you’re going to be so good. Why do you make me look so foolish?

Coaching and execution on the O
Take a look what BYU is doing against Oklahoma on the road. They might pull off the upset of the year despite a huge disadvantage in talent.
BYU with the lead! Wow!
Wide open on a huge play. That’s execution.

it helps that Oklahoma lost their best player for a half

Yeah but OU is supposed to have a dozen
First rounders on their roster. I think this also point to how important QB is to the spread offense. USC didn’t miss a beat with a fresman and has 3 QBs who could all play at a similar level. You take out a Bradford or McCoy and there will be a huge drop off because the offense depends on them completing 70 percent of their passes. I’m too lazy to look it up, but the spread seems to demand a unusually high completion rate to be succesful. Juice and McGee are just not accurate enough.

Couldn't agree more
Duck99 you said it perfectly. Where was the leadership? Where was the intensity? Juice is a senior and has watched Mizzou beat him twice and when things went wrong today he seemed to look defeated, unwilling to take on the challenge. It all started when Benn went out, and continued with every failing drive thereafter. Did you see him on the sidelines? He was pouting, with no emotion or since of urgency. Where was the “Tebowness?” Had Tebow lost his top receiver on the first drive and had his team started from behind, he would have been fired up, encouraging his teammates, and would have took it upon himself to lead his team past the burden that they were faced with. And thats what a true leader would have done. I mean sure, was this game soley Juice’s fault? Not even close. His recievers let him down (AJ Jenkins and Jeff Cumberland) and the running game struggled to get established, but I just didn’t see the heart and determination out of our team leader.
Obviously another thing Juice couldn’t control was the defense. Martez just looks lost. He doesn’t go all out, which is a sight Illini fans are not used to seeing from our MLB’s, with J and Brit having played the position the past three seasons. D-line pressure was there, but Gabbert seemed to be able to do whatever he wanted. I don’t understand how we have yet to figure out that offense, when we’ve seen it the past three years.
I would like to say I liked the performances from both RB’s Mikel Leshoure and Troy Pollard, along with LB Ian Thomas. But other than that, today’s performance was one to forget. Ok enough from this game… Illinois just needs to refocus and make the decision to not let this ruin their season. They are still a very talented team and are more than capable of beating any team on their schedule. It’s up to them how the remainder of this season turns out.

I didn't understand the decision to bring
Martez to the middle which makes me question Zook’s brain in the first place. He seems more like a DE who just rushes the passer full bore every play. He’s not a J or Britt at all. I’m really done with the Juice era as well. Disappointing to say the least
Zook needs to develop a recruiting pipeline in SoCal(where I live). There are 10 great QBs here every year and half of them never get off the bench at USC that’s how Mike White did it. With Barkley doing well someone needs to put in a call to Corp’s parents.

Let's be honest....
Illinois football = zero consistency

Do not worry about Illinois State
They are coached by Brock Spack. He does not believe in-game adjustments are legal in the game of football.
A futile crusade to prevent mass ignorance

Hey guys, look at it this way.
At least we’re not Indiana.
Wait, they won their first game.
Crap.

Alright.
We can chalk that one up as the turd thrown in the punch bowl at the beginning of the party.
Recall that in both 1983 and 2007, the season began with a loss to Mizzou. Illinois went to the Rose Bowl both years.
Obviously it was the same start last year, as well as 2002. But I’m not gonna go there.
Anyway, that game sucked, but I’m not fully convinced this team is too much of a turdbucket just yet. The story will be different if we don’t go to a bowl game.

I tend to lose track of the Ron Turner "Era".
It’s for good reason. I can assure you of that.

Did you guys see the thumping Cinci gave to Rutgers?
They look like a very impressive team, and I for one am not looking forward to playing them in December…
