Thoughts on Ron Zook, and what the rest of this season means to him

It has been a wild week here in "Illini Nation" as Zook likes to say. What began with possibly the most disappointing and shocking performances by an Illini team in recent memory has evolved into a week of second  guessing and shake ups on the part of the coaching staff and the equivalent of vultures circling a wounded animal in the desert on the part of the media.

Zook, more than ever before, is feeling real pressure to deliver on the promises that the 2007 Rose Bowl season and several seasons of quality recruiting  have made. The fan base is not Florida's, it is not demanding BCS games year in year out, it only demands the two things that Zook has had the most difficulty in demonstrating as of late, improvement and consistency. The most frustrating aspect of being an Illini fan over the last two season has been the fact that we never ever really know how the team will perform week in week out. One week is an offensive explosion the next is a flat showing where the players seem uninvolved. If the fans, boosters and athletic department are disappointed in Zook for anything it isn't going to be losses, but an inability to show that the team is moving in the right direction, or any direction frankly.

The heat  has been turned up on Zook after last week and it is clear that he is cognizant of it. Two players suspended, several players losing playing time as a result of poor play and what has to be the most visibly angry and determined demeanor that I have seen from Zook in his entire tenure here at Illinois. He knows exactly the road that this could lead down, because he has been there before.

Star-divide

No I am not saying anyone will be trying to run Zook out of town if we have a losing season. If will take an incredibly poor showing for me to get on that band wagon. But I am not as easy to convince as others, and Zook knows the situation at hand. There are more actual expectations this year than any season he has had in Champaign, he has said all along also that a coach can only be truly evaluated by taking a recruiting class all the way to graduation. Well guess what, that is this year. What sort of evaluation would a five year track record of only having one winning season and one bowl loss.  Throw out the first two awful seasons and the team is still stands at only 14-12 over the past two seasons and last Saturday. Zook knows he must turn this team around, he has entirely too much talent on this team to have made such a poor showing and I believe if it is in his power to do it, he will do anything it takes to get this team into shape and ready to play. If not, the seat will only become hotter.

This is not an indictment of the coaching staff for a team's showing in just one game. But the media climate has decidedly began down the old "embattled coach" road already. I for one believe that Illinois should be very appreciative of what Zook has done and should continue to do here at the U of I. Brian Cook said recently that as long as the Illini have Zook they have a chance to pull one out of no where and make a run. Not every team can say that in the Big Ten, and only rarely has Illinois had a coach that can say that. Make no mistake, Zook might be the best coach that the administration could hope to hire. We are not a dream job like Michigan, we do not pay our coaches huge money like the SEC, and we do not live on a natural recruiting ground like Ohio State or Texas. And most of all, there is only a limited history of success here.  Before anyone starts thinking "we can give Zook the boot and then hire a really great coach to win with his players like Urban Meyer did." I would prescribe for you a healthy dose of reality. Illinois has played stepping stone more than destination for coaches, and when coaches do stick around they have struggled most of all to win recruiting battles.  Say what you will, but Zook has produced consistently on the recruiting front beyond what Illinois' natural place in the order has been.

You may get wildly inconsistent  bi-polar teams, but I guarantee you, that Illinois is still better off with Zook as the coach than anyone it could pull in off of the open market.

Well said, Joe.

I think Ron Guenther has been around long enough to realize that if you have an employee you trust (and having already given him five seasons, this would constitute trust), you stick with him/her until he/she falls FLAT on their face. That has yet to happen to Zook.

four losing seasons in five years at a school rich in tradition in a state loaded with talent

what exactly constitutes falling flat on your face in your book?

I’m not trying to be snippy, but Zook’s seat is hot for a reason. He was wildly unsuccessful at talent rich Florida as well. The guy’s resume shouldn’t instill blind support.

If this year is yet another bad one, Zook should be shown the door

Let's recall . . .

that Ron Turner got 8 years, and as we all know . . . Zook is Turner’s polar opposite (decent coach, putrid recruiter). Both were able to pull off an absolutely stunning season somewhere in the middle. Both started dreadfully, usually with losses to Mizzou. But past that, they’re polar opposites.

And I’m not sure, but the term “rich in tradition” must be a pretty subjective term here. Looking at Illinois as a tradition-filled football program while watching how many people show up for Penn State, Ohio State and Michigan games each week leads me to feel a bit more insignificant compared to them. Not that it ever gets me down (it really doesn’t). We’re just not there.

Anyway, my point is that if The Completely Insignificant Turner Brother got 8 seasons, so should Zook. Logically speaking.

Just because a mediocre coach got too many years

doesn’t mean we should repeat the mistake. That’s sort of a weak argument.

I really do think that this season is do or die for Zook,

at least in terms of the fanbase. If he can’t get to a bowl with this amount of talent, then he has no place on the sideline. At least, that’s how the average fan will see it. And those finicky alumni can exert a lot of pressure on Guenther to find someone new.

I’m willing to give him at least a couple more seasons. After all, Bruce Weber had an awful season with his first full recruiting class (‘07-’08), and it looks like he’s righted the ship.

Ron Zook a great coach

As to your more obvious inaccuracies the Illini have had a share of great players dick butkus you might remember was good as are all these http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Illinois_Fighting_Illini_football_players
the rest of your inaccuracies are harder to document but Coach Zook took a depleted Florida bench and made a championship team- look what he did for the Illini the man has enegery, ability and a great record. soon florida will wish they had him back—Go Ron
and if he has a bad game or two just reread this article because you have written a bad article or two

Ernie, I write bad articles like Alabama makes recruiting violations...

…its a daily occurrence. But that said I didn’t call for Zook’s head in the article, I am simply looking at the climate he is in right now. The media and fan base in any college town can become blood thirsty, some much much more than others (Florida, Notre Dame) but eventually people do expect results for the money they pay a coach. Illinois gives a very long leash to the football coach because it has not in the past been a year in year out threat to win the Big Ten. I don’t disagree with you that the Illini have had a lot of great players over the years, but success on the field and having good players are clearly two different things. How many times have the Illini won the Big Ten in the last 30 years? 3 times. ‘83, ’90 and ’01. A fanbase and Athletic department with that immediate past is not going to be asking for a timetable on a BCS championship. That is not to say we can’t, or that Ron Zook wont. But those are not the expectations. What is expected is to be competitive and to make bowls, from there, then the team can move to the next level.

I think alot of Zook’s future will be defined by how this team performs this year, and that is defined mostly by expectations. Even slow to move Michigan fired Lloyd Carr when he lost to Appy State in 2007, because the team had a preseason #5 ranking and the fans expected a Championship. Zook is in complete control over just how hungry the fans and boosters are here for his job.

what must be done...

look, i admit i am a gator, and knew zook was inadequate when the name was first floated. and then it was reality within hours. the horror. and then he has the nerve to claim the cupboard was bare. how dare he. he was given rex grossman as a junior, after a second place heisman showing. cupboard bare? how dare he. what must be done eventually, must be done immediately. get an up and comer. he’ll give you a rose bowl season before taking a better job, but you’ll have a couple years of hope for glory and then you’ll have a shot at being a consistent 7-4 team but be consider and produce a quality entertaining product that only college football can give us. tommy tuberville. invite him to champaign. and please keep away from lane kiffin. that would be the only way you could go wrong. i wish you all the best of luck, and at least enjoy the couple games of entertainment you get with the zooker. i harbor you know ill will except for that all american bowl once upon a time.

What's the best way to placate an SEC troll?

Bring up the name of Ron Zook, I guess.
