Illini final Depth Chart released, alot of or's and maybe's

You final actual factual honest to goodness depth chart has finally been released. Within it contain very few if any surprises.

On fact of note, the RB's are listed as or's for the starting spot, in alphabetical order. Oddly enough, alphabetical just happens to the order in which playing time will be split this season. It goes Dufrene OR Ford OR LeShoure OR Pollard as your starting RB. All of that being contingent upon the severity of DD's leg sprain.

Your offensive and Defensive lines shook out in a pretty advantageous manner. As in there are no Freshman starting on the O-line, thank God. On the O-line it goes Jeff Allen (So) Randall Hunt (Jr.) Eric Block (Sr) Jon Asamoah (Sr.) and Ryan Palmer (Jr.)

Your D-line looks like it could make a splash this year (crosses fingers) The "starting 4"  are Pilcher, Sirod, Brent and Antonio James, but everyone knows that Corey Liuget is going to have a ton of snaps at DT as well as Clay Nurse at DE. I am also looking forward to see rFr Whitney Mercilus this year, not only did he supposedly have a great camp, but he challenges Iowa's Pat Angerer for best named defensive player in the league. Take not football fans if you want your son to be a great football player he needs a name like this to be truly great, as such I plan on naming my son Odin Skull-cracker.

Other than that nothing really of note on the chart, the DB situation is not so terrible that Hawthorne was list on the two deep of any position. And as expected there are about 200 receivers to choose from on this roster.

I know this offense doesn't particularly NEED a fullback . . .

but is it disconcerting to anyone else that the only fullback listed on this depth chart is a true freshman?

Then again, it’s not a TERRIBLE thing. Hell, ‘Tez could probably play FB in a pinch . . . I sure as hell wouldn’t want to be in front of him anyway.

One day, David Backes and Albert Pujols will combine forces to become the most awesome piece of violent force known to man.

Just joined HTTO as I live in Southern California and don't get much

Illini news. “Attended” school in the early 80’s. Was wondering how Hawthorne has been looking and if he will see any playing time this year. I know they are loaded at WR and am wondering if they are considering a redshirt.

On another note I was shocked that Pete Carroll named true frosh Matt Barkley as starter and was wondering if Aaron Corp might consider transferring. He would be a fantastic addition to the Illini. I saw him in high school and the kid was unbelievable. He was recently named the best Orange County, Ca high school QB of the last 20 years and that list included Matt Leinart, Carson Palmer, Mark Sanchez, and Barkley. I know the Illini coaching staff can’t contact other school’s athletes, but……..

He could definitely run the spread offense as his speed is one of his biggest weapons. With 3 years of learning the USC system he’s the complete package.

Hawthorne may actually play defense this year.

Read up on it here:

I’m not sure Corp would want to come to the Illini. USC has a very tough schedule this year, with away games at OSU, Cal, Notre Dame, and Oregon. I think Barkley will be on a very short leash and if he struggles even a little bit, Corp will get his shot.

Maybe, but Carroll has never really given a backup a chance in his stint at USC

Granted not many have struggled (Carson Plamer, Leinart, JD Booty and then Sanchez), but I thought Sanchez was clearly superior to Booty during Booty’s senior year, but he stuck with Booty. Apparently NFL scouts did as well as Sanchez is a very rich young man who is going to start in NY and Booty might not make the Minnesota roster. That makes Carroll’s attempts at trying to keep Sanchez out of the draft even more disingeneous. He wanted him to stay so that Barkley would get a year under his belt and then he could come in and take over. I think Corp is being set up to be a back up. Worked out for Matt Cassell, but that’s kind of a fluke.

I just think Corp would thrive in the spread offense like a Chase Daniel, but he is taller and a faster runner (although Daniel was very good at running too).

Who appears to be Juice’s successor?

While it's true

that it seems like Carroll doesn’t give his backups much of a chance, that’s because the starter was the guy who was “next in line.” All of those guys you mentioned had to wait at least part of their college careers to get the starting job, just like Corp. And all of the sudden, his job is taken away by a freshman. I think that if Barkley struggles even a little, there will be pressure from higher ups to put the experienced man in.

Which makes you wonder

If Mitch Mustain ever really had a chance at USC.

It will supposedly be an open tryout

but with as much experience and as many snaps that Eddie McGee has seen over the past few seasons, I would be very surprised if its not him.

The year after you will have Charest, Scheelhasse and Chandler Whitmer all with very good cases to make for the job. Scheel is going to RS this year, so that will put Charest as an RS Junior, Scheel as an RS Soph and Whitmer as a soph. Take your pick on these guys, they are all pretty good but have seen no real playing time yet
