The Linking Illini is making a quick change of plans

A couple decent stories and one i consider a total bombshell, All American WR Terry Hawthorne to be switching to DB for this season. In an otherwise very quiet and normal Camp Rantoul, this has got to be the biggest story of fall camp. Even though a couple weeks ago he was held out of practice for a hand injury, Terry Hawthorne will be playing at corner this fall.

  • Hawthorne trying defense - IlliniHQ.com
So it has come to this, has it. I am optimistic that the defense will be able to hold its own this year, but the loss of Miami Thomas must really have made an impact on the coaching staff's outlook for the DB unit this season. Why else would an All American receiver be converted to defensive back? I do of course understand that if there is any position on the field where the team could most afford a switch it is receiver, but still I had high hopes of Hawthorne making a splash even among that level of competition, he may still make that splash but apparently on the other side of the ball. I just hope that down the road we can afford to switch him back

  • Marshall tragedy more than a movie to Illini coach -The State Journal-Register
Jim Pry, the receivers coach here at the U of I, discusses his experience at Marshall University and the famous plane crash in 1970 that took the lives of most of the team. Given the talent he has to work with this year, do you think there is any coach with more expectations on him this year on the staff?

  • Former Illini Williams returns for 'Legends' dinner, auction | The Daily Illini
From the DI, Deron Williams perhaps the most beloved and important Illini basketball player EVAR will be returning to Champaign again this year for the Night of Legends dinner. I am really happy to see Deron back in town again, especially because he is easily the most recognizable Illini player in the league, as well as a certifiable NBA star. As often as UNC and Duke get their players back on campus, its good to see Illinois getting a similarly positive treatment from its former stars.

We do quickly forget . . .

that Terry Hawthorne started on both sides of the ball for the 2008 Class 7A State Champion East St. Louis High School Flyers. Yes, he’s an All-American wideout (and seeing him from that state title game . . . he’s well-deserving of that honor), but usually athletes like that are better served on the defensive side of the ball. So this isn’t too big a leap here, although I think you’re right to hope they eventually switch him back to wideout.

Oh, and Deron Williams is the bomb.

One day, David Backes and Albert Pujols will combine forces to become the most awesome piece of violent force known to man.

I think Hawthorne could make some big plats at DB.

He’s got some pretty good athleticism and speed from what I’ve heard (which is obvious given his upside as a WR), but he’s also known for his ability to track and adjust to the ball while it’s in the air. I think, this season at least, he could have a bigger impact on defense than on offense, where our WR core is stacked, and he could see limited touches.
