Big Ten Media Day 1 wrap up: in which our hero reflects on his experiences.

So that was definitely an experience to remember.  If I haven't driven this point home for you people enough, I do this whole blog thing for fun, without any real talent for sports journalism or anything of the like. Don't ask me then, how I ended up at a media convention with all of these media professional types.

Full disclosure, I  am 22 and fresh out of college, from the moderately populated Quad Cities, on the Illinois Iowa border. I don't consider myself one of them there wide eyed country boys what for aint never been to the big city before, and I consciously tried to avoid looking like one. Although that may be difficult when I am stuffing my bag with as much free swag as possible, and loading my plate up with a mountain of complementary lunch foods. Hey man, I am still a poor student that relies on a summer job for spending money, the grab the free shit impulse is strong in me.

I have to say that alot of thanks have to go to MaizenBrew Dave, without whom I would have been even more lost here. I am sure he could tell that I was about as nervous as can be about screwing up in some way and introduced me to some cool people as well as gave me pointers of what to do and when.

Although most of the day was spent painfully trying to look relatively professional and stuffing my face with some fine Chicago Hyatt sandwiches (natch) I did learn alot about the media in general heard a great deal from Zook in a huddle of print journalists and I hope provided some great stuff for the readers here on HTTO.

Tomorrow of course is the sit down day for interviews with players and coaches, I am going to do my best  to get a word in edgewise with Zook and the players, but we will see, I do not want to cross Loren Tate. The whole deal starts back up bright and early tomorrow morning 8am central time. I'll be there providing my tweedle-dees and blog postings as best I can. Then its back my farm town to ride tractors for fun.

My mother was born in the QC's.

But on the Iowa side. Since her family roots for Iowa State (with practically all of her cousins having attended school there at some point), they’re obviously “the good kind” of Iowans.

So did you pull up to the Chicago Hyatt in a John Deere or a horse-drawn carriage?
