Illini #19 in Andy Katz's absurdly premature top 25
Sure, some of the most important players haven't even gone to their senior prom yet, let alone started practicing with their college teams, but ESPN and Andy Katz want you to know that it is never ever too early to make an arbitrary top 25 rankings based on pure unbridled speculation. Says Katz of the Illini
"19. Illinois: The Illini were upset by Western Kentucky in the first round of the tournament, but they should be primed for a deeper run next season. They should have a stud back in Mike Davis and the experience of reaching the NCAAs to be a factor in the Big Ten -- the sixth team from the conference in this top 25."
So there you have it, national preseason recognition, why it positively feels like 2004. Also of note, there are 6 Big Ten* teams in his top 25. Choke on that, every other conference.
Big Hat Tip to the Daily Gopher for this.
*edit, because I don't proof read and tend to type while eating.

uh, what?
there are 6 teams in his top 25.
No wonder it’s so premature, he still has 19 spots to fill.
I think that's a good estimate.
The Illini were top 25 towards the end of last season and showed signs of a very good future. With further development of Tis and D-Mac, and a great incoming class (scout.com has us at #13 in terms of recruiting), we should have some very competitive teams for years to come.
