Tonight the Gene Keady Coaching tree will be on full display. Both Bruce Weber and Vandy coach Kevin Stallings were assistants under Keady in the 90's. Throw in the current Purdue coach Matt Painter into the mix and you have three very good, very prominent basketball coaches who have done pretty well for themselves. With three top of the line assistants giving him advice about basketball, why did no one say anything about the hair? But I digress.
I also realized something, a Commodore, the Vanderbilt mascot is a naval commander, (if my memory of the Pirates of the Caribbean movies are correct that is) and Vanderbilt is located in Nashville Tennessee, as far as I know a landlocked city in a landlocked state. So I fired up the old internet and did some 'vestigatin' and found out that Cornelius Vanderbilt, the rich muckety muck who founded the University was known as "commodore" because of his vast steamboat empire. Making Vanderbilt another university founded due to the conscience of a gilded age robber baron, like Stanford, Carnegie Mellon or Iowa State (named for Thaddeus L. Iowastate, the great corn-baron of the Midwest) Learning is fun isn't it?

but Kevin Stallings is wearing a purple tie tonight. Probably in honor of his high school coach, Virgil Fletcher, who was a high school basketball coaching legend at Collinsville High School. Mr. Fletcher passed away earlier this year, and this is the first time Stallings has coached a game in the State of Illinois since then.
