Alex Legion leaves Illinois

Maybe we should have seen this one coming. After all Legion left Kentucky because he felt he wasn't getting enough playing time, why would he want to stick around here where he has fallen all the way down to the 6th option at guard. This is the quote from IlliniHQ.

"Alex is a good kid who faced a difficult situation in returning to the court last year at semester break," Illinois  coach Bruce Weber said in a release. "He worked hard during his time here and gave great effort. We wish him the best and we'll do whatever we can to help him in his transition."

We all wondered why Bill Cole's minutes kept rising as the season went on and Legion's only went down, we were told it was because of his turnovers and defense, but to be honest his undoing at Illinois was that he never really found his shot. He ended up being eclipsed by the freshmen this year, and saw the writing on the wall for next year: an even more competitive  environment for guard playing time, and only a small amount of college eligibility left.

Regardless of the disappointment that it must have been for Alex, and I know that it was for fans, hopefully he lands in a place that will allow him to showcase his talents as he wishes.

In the cynical way of thinking though, it looks like Richard Semrau has secured a scholly spot for his RS Senior season.

Very un-shocking.

He’d become, like, the 16th option behind the manager. Yikes.

Good luck to Alex, though.

Not

A huge loss or huge surprise. I figured it would be only a matter of time. He came in under a mountain of huge expectations, so maybe the pressure of being the star transfer affected his shot—or he could just be a huge bust. Who knows—wish him well and all the best at his next stop. On the other hand, now Bruce can really seriously think about that kid from Rock Island he’s in Bloomington to watch this weekend.

Aaaand our practices and shootarounds just got much less competitive

But seriously – not exactly a surprise. Best of luck to him and maybe he can find his game somewhere else.

Good riddance!

Such a highly touted transfer and such a bust, painful watching him never play and shoot to the level he was supposed to. Hope he finds success somewhere else, but I don’t see it happening.
