Black Friday: Illinois at Cincinnati, Unfortunately in football.

Illinois Fighting Illini at Cincinnati Bearcats, Nov 27, 2009 11:00 AM CST

This could get ugly. I am usually an incredibly optimistic individual who looks for the bright side of everything and hopes that it will all work out for the best in the end. I am usually the type of person who thinks anything that looks that much like a sure thing, can't be. I am usually a person who thinks that the Illini will almost always at least make a game of it. Today, as I recover from a pumpkin pie and turkey gravy binge, I do not feel so optimistic. And maybe its residual effects from overdosing on sage stuffing, but I feel queasy about what could end up happening to this team on national television tonight.

Believe it or not, had the Illini somehow pulled off a win two weeks ago against Northwestern, I might not feel this way. This team, for better or worse had seemingly performed purely on emotion. When things get going good, the only thing that can stop them is the clock running out (which has happened a few too many times.) When things get going bad, the team seems to deflate and things get much worse. Being eliminated from bowl consideration two weeks ago, I have my doubts about how much the team will be getting up for these last two games.

Tony Pike scares the crap out of me, he is a very good quarterback with a 17 to 3 TD to INT ratio. The Bearcat defense scares me too, having replaced 10 starters from last years team and still a very solid group. Worst of all, Brian Kelly is not only one of the most talked about coaches for all of the high profile jobs that will be opening up next season, he has the chops to back it up.

Oh god. its starting now....

You have every reason to be frightened of

Pike. He is absolutely shredding our secondary—and I don’t even need to see the game to know it. 11-15 for 181 and 3 TDs (somebody make the bad man stop!) I can feel this pain half a world away. You tell yourself over and over that the football season is over and nothing is going to bring it back and look forward to basketball, but the losing still feels like a sharp stick to the eye.

Well

Would you look at that…could we have a shoot out on our hands? At least we halved the score. Maybe we can start living on that momentum we used to actually win a couple of games.

Someone

Please explain the concept of pass defense to our guys. So far so good on the run. I really should know better than to open my bid mouth.

Not so much

They shot themselves in the foot. I’ll take it though especially because it gives us a pretty short field.

We need

to just pound the ball. Their run D seems a little suspect to this point.

a very pourous secondary.

Really

Would it be too much to ask that our punter be allowed to tee it up? We need a little something anyway.

And yet

I still watch. I suppose I should come to expect a bit of masochism after staying in Afghanistan for almost 6 months. Such is life :)

Never mind

ESPN.com is cruely toying with my emotions. Either that or I’m going completely insane. It’s really a toss up at this point.

No need

Like I said, just a nasty masochistic streak. That and anything for a bit of home. Garbage time TD and they try for the 2 points. Go figure.

Well

Two good things I’ve seen. 1) the game is almost over. 2) we’ve held them to 7 rushing yards with 2 min to play. They’ve been in negative rushing yards for most of the game. Props to the rush defense today.

Really

Me and my big mouth, now they start giving up yards on the ground.

In all

If you look at the box, it looks like we should have won. 1st downs, total yardage, rushing yards, total plays, turnover ratio and time of possession—we had a decided advantage in all of these. Of course we also had a decided advantage in the penalties and yards off penalties too…shot ourselves there…and we couldn’t do anything to stop their pass. Note to Ron (or whoever takes over for him)—rush defense is fine, we need to be able to get pressure on the QB.

Juice

Even had his best day of the year with a line of 21-34-282-3-0. That’s right, 3 TD NO INT.
