With Chancellor Herman resigning, Ron Zook's future only gets more complicated

Its been an awfully bad week for Illinois, losing not only to Indiana but to our 4th straight Big Ten game. Many of us feel, (myself included) that things really can't get any worse this season. Many people want to make the next logical jump and assume then that Ron Zook has more then likely already lost his job.

But people let me tell you, firing a coach is a hell of a lot more complicated than that. Performance aside, Zook still has a lot on his side when it comes to keeping his job after the end of this season.

For one the school is not exactly flush with money right now, the state budget shortfalls have been passed along to the school, and may not be in any position to buy out the remainder of Zook's contract. The contract of course was extended just this last off season to the year 2014. At 1.5 million, counting this season's salary, I believe it would take 7.5 million dollars to buy out the entirety his contract. Of course the hiring of a new coach would then result in at least another million dollars per year.

This is no small amount of cash. Its a financial decision that would involve more than just the athletic department. That is where this summer's series of scandals really comes into play. The entire Board of Trustees has been replaced based on the clout scandal, along with the resignation of University President White, and now just this week Chancellor Herman. There is an entirely new board and a temporary president, but at this point none of them may feel comfortable enough making a major decision like firing the football coach at this time.

Even if this Illini team doesn't win another game this season, the decision more than likely will still come down to money. Many of the games this year sold a lot of tickets ahead of time, when the expectations for the Illini this season were very high, so at this point I don't see too much of a drop off in tickets sales for this season. But, no matter how the Illini finish this season, I very much doubt that you will see any games sold out for next season. It was after all the season after his 1-11 season that sealed Ron Turner's fate several years ago. When the fans stopped showing up and the school was not making money on the team, that's when the trigger was pulled.

And that's why I think that this might not be Ron Zook's final season after all. Many of the tickets have already been sold for this season, so its tough to say that we are losing alot of money this season. Just like Turner I have a feeling Zook will get another year after the first rough season before anyone finds the financial justification to make a move. Don't assume quite yet that Zook's time in Champaign is over.

Man! On a dreary day, I was hoping for some good news and I get this.

Joe I gotta hand it to ya dude, you are pretty tuff to keep bloggin when you only get a few responses for your trouble. I appreciate the work though.

You are probably right on your assumption, but right now I would take a juco coach over what we have. I really figured that last year was a blip and we would bounce back and Zook ain’t JoePa, he doesn’t get that many bad years to work through it. At least when JoePa had a bad year you had to figure he knew what to do to get out of it. Sorry to go all Penn St. but that’s what you are comparing, Zook doesn’t have an impressive enough resume for me to keep him, but you are probably right about the money.

You're the fail to my win?

Not a bad reason at all.

Haven’t seen too many around here though. But if I do I will send them your way.

I have any idea

referencing the fan post saying Weber to get a raise:

Weber’s a class act and a loyal guy. He’d be willing to stay here for his usual $1 million a year right? So… Don’t give Weber a raise and use that money to buy out Zook’s contract.

You’re welcome.

As for Weber getting what he deserves? I’m looking your way, boosters.

Well. I'll say this:

As much as I’ve appreciated Zook giving Illinois as much appreciation as possibly could be given by either coast . . . if he survives a firing based on a budget matter, he’d damn well BETTER get shit fixed next year or else the other shoe drops. He would be put in the damn-near impossible position of having to get Illinois to a bowl game basically to keep his job. Unfortunate? Yes. But this football business, while it’s not cut-throat in this state, is not kind to losers around the realm.

A co-worker feels that Ron Guenther is going down too as soon as Zook is canned (if it happens). Problem is, this has been a basketball school for a good while now. And it’s plainly obvious that Weber was the right choice there (there’s also that little matter of Weber absolutely owning Mizzou AND the Poplar Street Bridge, but that’s minor). And it’s not like BKB is the only sport doing well at Illinois (See: Tennis, Wrestling, Gymnastics, etc.). Being good at football is nice, but at Illinois it hasn’t been a particular priority since John Mackovic left, and I’m not quite sure anyone really cares. So it’s gonna take a bunch more than this to get Ron Guenther to leave . . . and I don’t want him to be shit-canned.

One day, David Backes and Albert Pujols will combine forces to become the most awesome piece of violent force known to man.
